What is Language Conventions?
Language Conventions is the third and final component of the NAPLAN literacy tests.
In this exam, you will be tested on your knowledge and skills in spelling and grammar.
You’ll be answering around 60 (give or take) multiple choice and spelling correction questions in45 minutes.
Language Conventions is often considered as one of the more straightforward NAPLAN tests but be warned, it’s still important to prepare nonetheless.Spelling and grammar can trip up even the best of us!
But first…
Before we proceed, I’ll give you some quick definitions. These will make the next couple of sections a LOT easier to understand. You may already know these words but it’s always worthwhile revising them.
条款 -long story short, the clause is the building block of the sentence. They contain a subject and a verb and can function as nouns, adjectives or adverbs. Clickhere有关更多信息。
Syllable– a unit of pronunciation, consisting of one vowel sound with or without surrounding consonants. For example, the word “writing” has two syllables while the word “test” only has one.
Suffix –an ending added to a word to make a new word. For example, “ing” is a suffix added to “end” -> end + ing = ending.
What will I be asked to do?
Spelling questions will take one of two forms:
纠正identified errors in: | – Less frequently used one-syllable words with double or r-controlled vowels. – Less frequently-used two-syllable words. – Multi-syllable words with the suffix ‘ance’ |
Identifyingandcorrecting错误: | – Multi-syllable soft ‘c’ words – Multi-syllable ‘c’ words with regular spelling patterns |
Grammar and punctuation question on the other hand, will ask you to do the following:
Grammar
- Identify the tense of a short passage
- Identify the correct form of a comparative adjective in a sentence
- Identify the word that functions as a verb in a sentence
Punctuation
- Identify the purpose of italics in a sentence
- 在句子中找到逗号以强调一个条款
- Recognise that colons can be used to introduce lists.
How can I prepare?
To prepare for spelling, keep a list of words that you know you struggle with. To make the list even more specific to NAPLAN, check out words asked in previous papers. Are there any that you’d struggle with? Chuck ‘em on the list!
一旦你有了一个坚实的列表(至少十个words), enjoy a throwback to primary school with the good old Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check strategy. Although it’s fairly self-explanatory, I’ll explain it anyway:
Action | Description |
---|---|
Look | Look at the word and read it in your head. |
Say | 大声读出这个词。正如你所说的那样,密切关注其声音。语音学(单词的声音)可以在导航拼写方面是一个很大的帮助。 |
Cover | Cover the word with your hand. |
Write | 虽然这个词仍然被覆盖,但尝试写出正确的拼写。 |
Check | Check how you went! If you didn’t get it right, keep trying until you do. |
For the more technologically-inclined,Quizletis also a great resource. Various other users have very kindly created Year 9 NAPLAN spelling AND grammar flashcard sets available for you to access and use for free.
And of course, it wouldn’t be a NAPLAN article if I didn’t recommend working through some past papers! Check them outhere.
But remember!
ACARA (the body responsible for NAPLAN) have released the following disclaimer:
虽然Naplan仍然很重要,但提升HSC要求意味着绝对不需要在测试中爆发。
NAPLAN is ultimately intended to cover what you’ve been learning at school.
It’s not something you should be cramming for.
And voila! Our handy-dandy guide to scoring a Band 8 or above in NAPLAN Language Conventions!
