Why should you study a Business degree at Monash?

A Bachelor of Business at Monash isa broad degree that provides you with tons of opportunities to explore different avenues of business and build an awareness of what the industry is like. There is a wide array of career paths to follow, and you have the flexibility to choose what you would like to specialise in from12 majorson offer!

Before coming to study this degree, I didn’t know how I would be able to get into the Big Four, or what the corporate world would be like.I think this degree really helped me understand that,” said Ahmad.

Top 3 Pros of a Business degree

# 1:网络

Networking isan essential part of the business world for finding new opportunities, learning new business techniques and landing jobs.

At Monash, a great way to network comes in the forms of joining academic clubs and societies, such as theBusiness and Commerce Student SocietyandMonash Accounting Students’ Association.

#2: Broad worldview

One of the key expectations of a business graduate is that they willbe an ethical global citizen who has cross cultural competence. A Business degree equips you with a broader understanding of the globalised world and provides an international perspective to guide decision-making.

#3: Diversity of subjects

To help you develop your expertise,Monash allows students to explore a number of different business disciplines through core units and electives before finalising their major choice. With subjects like Marketing Theory and Practice, Microeconomics and Business Statistics, you get to experience a taste of the multiple pathways of Business before choosing your favourite.

Ahmad said, “You have the opportunity to have access to lots of different subjectsand meet a diverse range of people from different cultural and academic backgrounds.”

Top 3 Cons of a Business degree

#1: Too vague

A consequence of a Business degree being so broad means thatit can be quite vague when it comes to specific career prospects.

Sometimes the majors feel like gimmicksbecause even though I did Business Law, I can’t become a lawyer. I would have liked to have known that from the start,” Ahmad said.

#2: Expensive

“For a basic Bachelor of Business,it’s way too expensive considering that most of this information is available online,” Ahmad pointed out.

With a regular 3-year Business degree at Monash totalling at $41K, the cost is more than bound to cause a dent in your pocket!

#3: Monash doesn’t add weightage to resume

Although Monash is in the Group of Eight as one of Australia’s leading universities,Ahmad shares his doubt on its reputation in adding to the value of career prospects.

I’m yet to see how going to Monash actually stands out.I think that I would have had a similar experience studying a Bachelor of Business at other unis.”

Any regrets?

One of Ahmad’s regrets of studying a Bachelor of Business washis decision to do all his core subjects at the beginning of his degree.

“If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have done Business Law or Accounting. I did all of my Accounting subjects too early, andwhen I thought that Accounting was something that I wouldn’t like to do, Business Law was the only next option that I could take because there were a lot of subjects overlapping between those majors.

If there was a key piece of advice that Ahmad would like future students to know, it’s thata good mix of electives and core subjects at the start of your degree is the best way to gain a good sense of what you would like to dofor your career.
